"The Meaning of Life" The 2010 Peggy Kai Memorial Lecture was given by the Rt Reverend Steven Charleston on 13 September 2010 at the Cathedral of St Andrew, Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Rt. Reverend Steven Charleston, an internationally recognized advocate for First Nation peoples, the environment, faith and justice issues was our 2010 Peggy Kai speaker. On Monday, September 13 at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Tenney Theatre, Bishop Charleston presented the Margaret “Peggy” Kai Memorial Lecture: “The Meaning of Life: A Short Course in Why We are Here.” Bishop Steven Charleston has been called “one of the best preachers in the Episcopal Church”. Five years ago he delighted audiences in Hawaii with his unique vision of today’s world and with his revival style. Bishop Charleston is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and lived and worked on the reservations of North and South Dakota. As part of an indigenous culture his experiences resonate deeply with the people of our aina. His widely varied background helps him accurately identify the pulse of modern culture. In his talks he creates an intersection of his unique and insightful vision of today’s world with his passion for honoring and preserving our planet for future generations. Bishop Charleston served as a tenured professor of Systematic Theology at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, VI the Bishop of Alaska, President and Dean of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachussets, Provost of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and now returns full circle to his home in Oklahoma as Interim Dean of the Diocese of Oklahoma where he will care for his parents and be near his son, Nicholas, who works as a Choctaw language teacher for the tribe. Bishop Charleston is married to Suzanne Charleston, an artist trained at the Museum School in Boston. They have been married 32 years.
